Shark Bay Adventure: Swimming with Gentle Giants in the Maldives!
Hi, travellers! We had the most exciting day planned for our trip to **Maafushi Island** in the Maldives: a special trip to **Shark Bay** to swim with sharks! We woke up early, packed our snacks for Elina, and got ready to leave by 9:00 a.m. This full-day package included lots of activities, and we were so excited to see if we could achieve our dream of swimming with sharks!
Before we even got on the boat, we went to the activity center to collect all our gear: life jackets and snorkeling equipment. Our hosts, the Triton Prestige crew, were super helpful and made sure we felt safe. We learned that the sharks here **don’t have teeth**—they are baby sharks, so there was nothing to worry about! Still, swimming with them felt like something out of a movie.
Snorkeling, Stingrays, and Safety First
Once we got to the spot, we could see fish everywhere, along with **stingrays** and the huge shapes of the sharks swimming below! The crew gave us strict rules before we jumped into the water. We had to wear our swim fins for safety, and we were told to **look but never touch**—especially not the stingrays, as you could get stung! We also had to keep our hands and feet away from the sharks to avoid accidentally startling them. We jumped in, and swimming right next to the huge sharks was a breathtaking, dream-like moment!
💡 Tip:
Always wear your swim fins when swimming with sharks, even if the water looks shallow. This protects your feet from accidentally stepping on a ray or shark, which could ruin your vacation!
Sandbank Picnic and Sunset Fun
After our swim, we headed to a beautiful **sandbank** for lunch. We had delicious yellow rice with chicken and sausage. It was very warm, but staying under the shade of the umbrella made it comfortable. After lunch, we still had energy left, so we rushed back to the island.
As the evening started, we noticed the island celebrating. We came back down to the beach to relax and watch the sunset. This area is very strict about swimwear: you can only wear **bikinis at the designated bikini beach**. In public areas, you must respect the local culture since this is a local island. Also, you won’t find liquor sold anywhere on the island, as alcohol is against the local religion.
💡 Tip:
If you want to try unique activities, focus on water sports that you can’t easily do at home, like the shark-watching tour! You can do basic water sports like jet skiing anywhere in Sri Lanka.
Maafushi By Night: Finding Friends and Souvenirs
We took a walk down the main street of Maafushi at night. This is where you’ll find the police station, hospital, ATMs, and the main **supermarket**, which sells everything from groceries to household goods. The island is small and easy to walk around.
We were happy to meet our friend **Hansaka**, a Sri Lankan YouTuber who lives in the Maldives! He gave us a pizza and even shot some cool video clips for us. We learned that the package we bought included our underwater photos and videos, which they transferred to our memory card for free before 8:00 p.m. Being able to connect with people from home who live and work in the Maldives was a wonderful experience.
Maafushi Magic: Why We Love Local Islands
Maafushi Island is an incredible place to visit if you want a **luxury experience on a budget**. We loved the freedom of being able to book our own activities, and because it was the off-season, the prices were generally lower. We are so grateful for the welcoming nature of the local people and the friendly Sri Lankan community here.
We’re sad to say goodbye to Maafushi! Our island adventures have come to an end, but we hope you enjoyed seeing the fun, safe, and exciting life of the Maldives beyond the resorts.
