Finding the Maldives on a Budget: Our Maafushi Island Adventure!
Hi, travellers! We know that some people dream of visiting luxury resorts, while others prefer exciting budget travel. Well, today, we are doing both by exploring **Maafushi Island** in the Maldives! After visiting a fancy resort, we were excited to see the local side of Maldivian life. We wanted to find out what budget hotels are like and what kind of cool activities you can do here.
Getting to Maafushi was easy! We took a fast **speedboat** from Male, which only takes about 45 minutes and costs a small fee per person. It’s the best way to travel, as the local ferry can take over four hours. We were dropped off right at the jetty and quickly checked into our hotel, the Triton Prestige Sea View and Spa.
Our Cozy Budget Stay and Island Transport
We loved our room! It had a beautiful sea view and even a **Jacuzzi** outside on the balcony! The whole island of Maafushi is easy to see from our window. Even though Maafushi is a small island, renting a bicycle is a fun way to get around quickly, and it only costs about $5 per hour at our hotel. Since walking with our little one can be tough, cycling is a great option for getting everywhere fast.
As soon as we arrived, we noticed the island was buzzing with activity! Many people travel from Male City to places like Maafushi during holidays like Eid, looking for a fun break from city life. This made the atmosphere happy and crowded, full of excitement and celebration.
💡 Tip:
When travelling to Maafushi, choose the fast speedboat! It costs a small fee (around $25 per person) but saves you hours compared to the local ferry, which is important when travelling with children.
Celebrating Eid and Local Island Rules
We arrived right during the **Eid celebration**, which was a huge event here! We saw people playing and celebrating by throwing colorful water and powder, which was a joyous way to mark the holiday. It was fun to watch and even more fun when we joined in the celebration!
Since Maafushi is a local island, there are a few important rules visitors must follow out of respect for the local religion and customs:
- **Bikini Beach:** You are only allowed to wear swimsuits at the specific designated bikini beach. In all other public areas, including streets and restaurants, you must be fully dressed.
- **No Liquor:** You will not find any restaurants or hotels selling alcohol on the island. If you want to have a drink, you must go out on a boat bar.
Dining, Shopping, and Water Activities
We tried some delicious food at the hotel restaurant, including Thai Fried Rice, sweet chicken, and a tuna dish, which was amazing. In the evening, the dinner was set up as a special outdoor buffet because of the Eid celebration. Even though we were full, the food was too delicious to resist! Maafushi also has a large supermarket that sells groceries, toys, and household items, making it easy to buy anything you need during your stay.
We saw many places along the beach offering water sports like jet skiing, kayaking, and windsurfing. The best part is that you can book amazing activities that you can’t do in Sri Lanka, like **shark watching** and **dolphin watching**. Because this is the off-season, many places offer discounts, making it a great time to try new activities!
💡 Tip:
Since we can do water sports like jet skiing in Sri Lanka, we chose to focus on unique activities like swimming with sharks—always prioritize the things you can’t experience at home!
Saying Goodbye to the Budget Paradise
Maafushi Island is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a **luxury experience with a budget**. We loved the simple, fun atmosphere and the easy access to activities. We are so happy we got to experience the local side of the Maldives!
